Hi! my name is Silas and I am 10 years old. I like science. currently I am competing in the science fair. my experiment is going to be about genetically engineering a non-hazardous E.coli bacteria to glow under blue light. this works because of something called competent cells. basically competent cells are a lot easier to mix foreign DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) with. just a breakdown on what DNA is: genetic information inside every cell telling them what to do. kind of like a set of genetic instructions. DNA can merge with other DNA which is the baseline of this experiment. by mixing jellyfish DNA with E.coli we can create a glowing bacteria! Click here if you want to learn more.
